APACS, the UK payments association, is a trade association for institutions delivering payments services to end customers. It is the forum which provides the opportunity for co-operative aspects of payments and their development to be addressed
It is the main industry voice on issues such as plastic cards, card fraud, cheques, electronic payments and cash.
In addition, APACS forecasts payment trends, conducts market research and industry statistics. APACS also helps to facilitate the development of payment industry standards and provides an industry voice on all non-competitive payment matters.
APACS has always overseen the process for delivering payment services, but in the lead up to the launch of Chip & PIN all aspects of Chip & PIN were handled by a separate group known as the PMO. The PMO was specifically set up to help launch Chip & PIN. The PMO disbanded in January 2005 and its functions were returned to APACS.
When APACS took back control of the standards and restarted the inter acquirer meetings, it invited Connie Penn, as Chair of The Forum, to attend inter acquirer meetings to ensure the needs of hospitality were being properly addressed. APACS recognised that Hospitality needed a lot more thought and care than had been given to it in the run up to the launch of Chip & PIN.
