Chip and Pin at restaurant

The Northampton Trial

To prove the concept of Chip & PIN and to trial the working processes for Chip & PIN, a trial was conducted in Northampton in May 2004. The trial proved that the cardholders and operators are in favour of Chip & PIN. There was little negative comment from operators and customers, where Chip & PIN had been deployed.

A faster way of working

  • Ease of paying and speed through checkouts is indeed very important. Tesco state that every second delay going through the checkout could cost them £1m. They have now deployed Chip & PIN throughout their estate and have not experienced any delays at the checkout. In some cases, as the cardholders have got used to Chip & PIN, the transaction time in fact decreased. As cardholders get used to "dipping the chip" they proceed to enter the PIN in one seamless movement. This is a much faster process than waiting for the receipt to be printed and handing it to the cardholder for signature. That is the success story of Chip & PIN.

Expert in 3

  • Safeway found during the Northampton trial that both the cardholders and operators became experts when they had completed 3 transactions. This experience was also confirmed as they enabled the technology nation-wide. Despite the subsequent spasmodic and uncoordinated distribution of the cards nation-wide, Safeway experienced neither technology nor training issues.
