The HCIMA Hospitality Users Discussion Forum for Chip and Pin

Chip and Pin at restaurant

On-going Work

One of the issues The Forum needed to resolve was Tabs in Food and Beverage. The Forum needed to find a solution to the established principle of taking an "electronic imprint of the card" [swiping the card, capturing the magnetic stripe and storing Track II] at the beginning of the transaction. The Forum wanted this practice to be continued in a secure format, even with Chip & PIN transactions, and suggested a Zero Value Cryptogram.

The Forum has failed to get agreement on a Zero Value transaction, but a compromise solution has been defined by the card industry that will help establishments go some way to securing their funds in elongated hospitality transactions. The solution found will no doubt be refined further as systems are developed, tested and implemented.

The Forum acknowledges that it will not get the "Zero Value Cryptogram", but are pleased that the concept itself, which will allow Chip & PIN transaction to be created to address the issue of tabs , is a very positive way forward.

Getting pre-payment for hospitality transactions is a practice that is gaining considerable popularity. The forum is now looking at processes to ensure that if these payments are taken without using full fraud screening and "customer not present" security processes, these payments can still be secured for the merchant.
