One-off soviet-style advert for Bytemark
Posted: 6/4/08

Soviet style advert for Bytemark

Bytemark, a leading web hosting provider, required an advert to promote their hand built servers as part of their hosting service. This advert was designed as a one-off approach to tie in with their presence at a forthcoming computer show.

The client was inspired by an illustration of a raised fist. This very soviet style image was duplicated and the phrase 'Built by Hand' was used (its bold and simple message harks back to the soviet posters of old).

quarter page advert for .net

As part of the ongoing development of Bytemark Hosting's advertising, a couple of new adverts were produced. The quarter page advert shown above was designed as a new approach to their promotion style. Previously solid yellow backgrounds with cutouts were used (see example here), this version takes the yellow and creates a simplified line which allows for full page images to be used and avoid the headache of sourcing cutout style imagery.

Inter-Parliamentary Union Covers

Created in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the international organisation that brings together the representatives of parliaments of sovereign States. This cover (and rear) was commissioned by the organisation in order to standardise their reports with a consistent structure (a new report was used as a basis). The top and bottom strips were the only items from their previous reports which were required. A French version in blue was also created.

Logo and stationery set for Romanian property company
Posted: 30/9/07

Property Investment Expertise are a Romanian property company based in the UK. The logo was developed from their brief which required the idea of 'property' pie be used. The pies used in Trivial Persuit formed the basis for the main graphic with an accent of red helping reinforce their pie element, the typography and its colour was used to instil confidence and stability (one of the most important factors for buyers).

This 32 page brochure sought to highlight how advertising intersects with 'consumers on the move'. The brochure was created at 12"x12" in order to maximise the impact of their range of outdoor advertising experiences and was printed on a silk stock with some spot varnishing on the people/vehicles for the cover.

Information portal for VERTIC
Posted: 26/8/07

VERTIC NIM website

This supporting webarea (within the main VERITC website) is a information heavy resource for information regarding National Implementation ('a process by which states take a variety of measures to bring their domestic law into conformity with their obligations under international law'). Funded by the UK and Dutch Governments, the site is targetted at worldwide organisations and governmental institutions.

Because of the sites complexity, a simple approach was taken to structure and navigation with the design based on the existing parent style (for which I had created the homepage).

UPDATE: Had the following feedback "We received incredibly favourable comments during the Biological Weapons Convention meetings in Geneva last week, and the UK Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva introduced it during his statement to the meeting. The US and Slovakia also referred to it as a very useful resource in their statements to the meeting. "

Management qualifications leaflet
Posted: 20/7/07

Institute of Hospitality Management Qualifications

Adding to the document hierarchy for the Institute of Hospitality's recently designed identity revamp, this text heavy publication highlights the management qualifications available via the Institute. Due to the fact that no imagery was required (these types of documents are generally presented in a fairly basic way), a design which fulfilled this need whilst maintaining stylistic links with the other image-led variants (see below) needed to be maintained. Additionally, a complex diagram needed to be simplified and made easier to understand.

Typography from above
Posted: 2/5/07

On a recent trip to Cheltenham, I visited one of the many hills which overlook the area. This statement greeted me as I looked down...very droll (it pertains to the horror film 'The hills have eyes'). I was impressed by the accuracy and consistency of the type as making those letters as big as they are must have involved much trial and error (as can be seen on the far left).

Flyer template for Livebookings
Posted: 13/4/07

Livebookings leaflet

Livebookings, for whom I had just created a folder, required a set of flyer templates to promote their services (both portrait and landscape). They also wanted to create their own text using Microsoft Word and therefore I proposed using preprinted stationary (of the images and logo) so we could use bleed and keep the quality. I supplied a separate Word document with the text in place using its ability to create stylesheets (Word isn't too bad at rudimentary design challenges as it has a floating text box feature).

It's all in a name(change)
Posted: 6/4/07

Institute of Hospitality logo

The HCIMA have changed their name to the Institute of Hospitality. Having created their brand identity in 2004, this namechange provided an opportunity to refine, update and improve upon what had gone before.

The new logo

The first area was deciding how the name should be presented and the best way with which to do this. The answer was to keep their heritage in the form of their crest but also promote a more contemporary and forward-thinking organisation. Neo Sans, a thoroughly modern typeface, was introduced utilising its variety of weights to achieve this. Emphasing the word 'Hospitality' ensured that their target sphere of influence which they wanted to promote was uppermost when seeing the logo for the first time.

Chiray logo, leaflet and business card

To support this sub-brands were introduced to help tie in other areas within which they operate (such as seminars, accreditation standards, benefits etc) under a consistent but separately distinctive sub logos.

Updated literature

This project also provided an opportunity to update and refresh existing literature. Rounded corners, use of a light gray (as well as the already established palette of blue and orange) and the new Neo Sans corporate typeface all help to reinvigorate the look and feel. The idea wasnt to radically alter the existing style but to refine and develop it (see here for an example of how a typical cover used to look).

Updated leaflets for the Institute of Hospitality

Additionally, their newsletter, membershipnews, also received a facelift. This opportunity allowed me to develop a more 'open' and 'fresh' approach compared to the old version (which was visually dark with lots of solid blue).

Flyer, logo and business cards for Chiray
Posted: 26/3/07

Chiray logo, leaflet and business card

Chiray is a consultancy specialising in development business opportunities between Chinese and English high tech and industrial companies (or who are seeking business opportunities). This leaflet (which was also created in Chinese) uses a bridge metaphor to denote the linking of two organisations (additionally a concept was submitted where the road was coloured red - something I will revisit for the website). Although a logo wasn't originally budgeted for so I created something quickly which used the Chinese translation of the name as the graphical device. A simply but powerful use of Helvetica Black and red helps establish its presence. A double-sided business card was created

Livebookings offer an online method for restaurants to accept reservations over the internet. This folder for LiveBookings use their star logo as a basis for the circular shapes. Magazine subscription adverts

HCIMA subscription featuring five finger puppets

Essentials primer booklet for Creditflux
Posted: 21/7/06

Creditflux Essentials Primer

This 80-page booklet, which will form part of a suite, was designed to impart important information concerning Creditflux's main area of expertise, that of credit derivatives and structured credit. Aimed at financial analysts and dealers within the field, the booklet was designed to be accessible, interesting and contemporary (the image is of sparks). For the cover, I wanted to steer away from traditional financial imagery and use something abstract and subtle. Additionally, it was matt laminated with a spot varnish covering the main image (leaving the tab and lower areas).

The interiors use a variety of methods to keep the reader engaged, such as pull quotes, small boxed items of interest, larger boxed areas which were differently executed whether for graphs, extracts and general information.

The other booklets to be developed will have the same image but rendered in a different colour. The tab at the top will change colour too (it is this tab colour which sets the supporting colour on the inside).

Bytemark Adverts
Posted: 11/2/06

Bytemark advert "will your hosting provider scale as quickly as you?"

Bytemark, a leading web hosting provider, required a new set of adverts promoting their specialist services. They wanted to convey that their solutions scale as you increase your demands. The simple concept of a businessman riding an ill-fitting bike was appropriate and fitted in with their identity which I had created back in 2004.

Bytemark also required that the adverts be available in various shapes and sizes—so the challenge was to make something which would also scale to half, quarter or smaller page sizes.

President's Ball Ticket

As part of the Monopoly themed HCIMA President's Ball event, held in November, various supporting materials were required. This ticket, created recently, is indicative of the overall style adopted and was also incorporated into an application form, promotional postcards and magazine cover. Hasbro were very accommodating and flexible with the use of imagery with the only proviso that a copyright notice was required (although they wanted to check the artwork, they never requested changes).

This approach was surprising as most recognised leisure and entertainment brands (from cartoon characters to toys) have very strict guidelines. Hasbro also supplied all the original artwork for all aspects of the game, from box design, icons, playing pieces to property cards and money. It was intriguing using the original artwork from a game I grew up with as a child.

The logo references a auditorium style layout with the concentric dashes mimicking sound waves (i.e. the imparting of information). The first seminar is for web marketing and I felt a metaphor for attraction was appropriate. The moths making their way (and partying around) the screen of a laptop was something I felt captured this idea.

New look website

Welcome to a new, improved website. I have made it cleaner, easier to navigate, more informative and a little prettier. I have used CSS for the entire layout and Server Side Includes for the navigation (which are great timesavers). I hope you enjoy the change and welcome any feedback you have.

The Swiss style
Posted: 26/9/05

I recently returned from Switzerland having trekked up mountain slopes and taken in the fresh alpine air (the picture on the left was taken just below the summit of the Shrekhorn). Whilst there it was interesting to see how the famous swiss style to design is implemented.

Passing the Credit Suisse bank in Interlaken I noted their posters promoting various services. Although the imagery was a little pedestrian the subtle use of the swiss cross and the placement of the Credit Suisse logo was rather appealing. Sorry for the poor quality of images but they were taken at night on a disposable camera.

The transport system in Switzerland is very efficient and pretty comfy. The national rail company, SBB, have literature at each station covering timetables, places to visit, different services as well as advertising. In typical Swiss style these were clean and simple with Helvetica used throughout.
